J.C. Penny to Open Largest Off-mall Store

Growing corridor to add Penney

National clothing and housewares retailer J.C. Penney Co. will open the doors July 30 to a new department store on the Northwestside, becoming one of the anchors in a revitalized Michigan Road retail, restaurant and office corridor.

The 100,000-square-foot store at 8752 Michigan Road is an extensive renovation of a long-vacant building that formerly housed Kmart.
While it will not be as large as its typical 150,000-square-foot, two-story mall stores, the new facility is the retailer's largest layout for a free-standing, off-mall building, said Penney spokesman Tim Lyons.
"And it will contain all of the major and Penney brands and departments including a beauty salon, portrait studio, catalog desk and other services," he said.
